We’re back!

O hi! We didn’t see you there, we’re still dreaming about our stint in Haiti. We have to tell you that the 8 days were fantastic. We saw family, friends, landscapes and trends. But as you know, we saw many of the same problems that have been plaguing our little nation for many years. Going to Haiti is always a bittersweet adventure.

Things we’ve learned during our recent trip in Haiti:

  • Haitian rap (Rap Kreyol) is more popular than konpa among the youth
  • Everyone has a cell phone (or two)
  • The youth has become extremely Americanized
  • Many non-Haitians still believe in Haiti’s future
  • Many, many, many Haitian people still care about Haiti’s future
  • We need a reforestation method ASAP
  • The streets of Haiti cannot handle two days of rain
  • A few people are still living very well
  • One day, hopefully sooner than later we’d like to go back to live in Haiti
  • Also never, ever use the iPhone internet when you’re out of the country.

About

This blog is a border space for Haitian-Americans. As young hyphenated people we either have to choose between being Haitian or American. Some of us have chosen both and this space is for us. I will cover any events, news, art, music or interesting people who represent the new generation of Haitian-American culture.
